Assignment Question

A company of your choice is looking into sending an employee with a specific personal or health-related challenge to a foreign country.

Your company director is asking you to prepare a cross-cultural training and support package for the employee. This plan should address the following information in a format of your choice:

Part A. The context (1000 words)

vIdentify Business Strategy and Needs (recommended word count = 300)

oYour HR plan must be tied to the overall business plan. Hence you should start off by assessing the goals of your company.

What will be the company’s goals and objectives for the expatriation?

What is the nature of the expatriation?

What will be the product and what is the potential size of the market?

Is there a demand to justify the internationalisation strategy?

vCountry Analysis (recommended word count = 500)

oCompare the general conditions of both countries (parent and host), including:

§General values,

§Political/legal/socio-economic situation

§Social institutions

§Standard of living

§Physical environment

vJob analysis and Job description (recommended word count = 200)

What is the position required in the foreign country? What are the main skills and experience required to meet the company’s goals and objectives?

Define the specific personal or health concern of the employee. Some examples include:

vphysical or learning disabilities

vmental health problem

vcaring responsibility

vchildren reaching crucial exam stage

vcertain phobia or other challenges

What are the main challenges the employee (with his/her specific condition) in performing the job in the new environment?

Part B. Expatriate’s Cross-cultural Training and Support Package (1000 words)

vWhat will the cross-cultural training and support package involve? Explain:

owhen will training and support be provided?

vHow will the specific personal or health concern of the employee be supported through cross-cultural training?

Through this assignment students should be able to critically evaluate organisational change in relation to:

Appraise how national institutional and cultural differences lead to differences in country specific HRM practices and underpin the differing perspectives on HRM.( A14, A15, A17, B1-B4, C1- C3, C5) §

Exercise judgement regarding the skills required by international managers for the management of cultural diversity. (A14, A12,A15, A17, B1-B4, C1- C3, C5) §

Analyse the impact of international businesses on their host countries’ systems and evaluate convergence or divergence in HRM practices and approaches. (A14, A15, A17, B1-B4, C1- C3, C5) §

Critically review HRM practices in a range of countries, in relation to work and organisational design, employee resourcing, reward and benefit systems, the management of performance, and the professional development of different kinds of employees. (A14, A12,A15, A17, B1-B4, C1- C3, C5) §
